Cambridge Neighbourhood Guide: Galt, Preston and Hespeler

by Mathew Toussaint

Cambridge is three historic communities that were amalgamated in 1973, and locals still talk about them by name. If you are house hunting here, knowing the difference between Galt, Preston and Hespeler will save you a lot of driving.

Galt

Galt is the largest of the three and holds the city's downtown core along the Grand River. It is known for its limestone heritage buildings, the Cambridge Mill area, the main street shops and restaurants, and the film crews that show up because the streetscape looks older than it is. Housing runs from century homes and converted lofts near the core to postwar neighbourhoods and newer subdivisions toward the south end. Buyers who want walkability and character usually start here.

Preston

Preston sits at the northwest edge of the city, closest to Kitchener and the 401. It has its own main street along King Street, a mix of older homes and newer infill, and some of the easiest commuter access in Cambridge. If someone in the household works in Kitchener or Waterloo, Preston often makes the shortlist.

Hespeler

Hespeler is the northeast community, built along the Speed River, with a small village feel around the old mill and Queen Street. It has seen a lot of newer subdivision growth on its edges, which means you can often find a larger, newer home here than in the older cores, and it is convenient for anyone commuting toward Guelph or the 401 east.

What to check before you choose

  • Commute at the time you actually drive it. The 401 and Highway 8 change the math a lot between Galt and Preston.
  • School catchments, since boundaries do not follow the old community lines.
  • Age of the home and its systems. Century homes in Galt and Hespeler can be beautiful, and they need a careful inspection of knob and tube wiring, galvanized plumbing, foundations and roofs.
  • Flood mapping near the Grand and Speed rivers, which affects insurance.
  • Zoning, if you are planning a second unit or an in-law suite.
